Why Switch to Winter Tires?

Winter Tires are designed to perform optimally in both snowy conditions and cold temperatures, providing the performance and safety you expect. In fact, they're recommended as soon as the average daily temperatures drops below 7°C. Athough most new vehicles are designed with front-wheel drivetrains, all four wheels should be equipped with winter tires. All tires require linear (forward) traction and lateral (sideways) traction in order to prevent loss of control.
Here are some important tips about winter tires, that will make for safer driving this winter:

  • Always install four tires, not two. Four tires will optimize the ABS and electronic-stability systems.
  • Mixing tires with different tread patterns, internal construction, and size degrades the stability of the vehicle and should be avoided.
  • Ensure that your tires are properly inflated. Tire pressures will decrease as the temperatures drop, so checking the inflation once a month is recommended.
  • When your winter tires’ tread has worn to 6/32nds of an inch, it’s time to get them replaced.

What's the difference in Stopping Distance?

Winter tires will improve a vehicle's stopping distance in colder weather, including in snow and icy conditions. Watch the video below to get an idea of how much of a difference the type of rubber compound makes on stopping distance:

    Understanding Tire Sizes

Those letters and numbers are important indications of what you should look for when buying new tires. A common tire size is P225/65R17 - let's break it down.

P - Passenger car tire in P-metric sizes; without the “P” are “European” metric sizes.
225 - The width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters.
65 - The height of the sidewall; the lower the number, the stiffer the sidewall.
R - Indicates Radial tire, constructed to strength, reinforcement and fuel efficiency.
17 - Determines the size of the steel or alloy wheel that the tire must be mounted on.
